Types of E-mailThere are two basic type of E-mail - Web based also known as HTML and the original form POP3. If you use AOL, MSN, PeoplePC or Juno, it is Web based. This type of E-mail is usually stored on a computer at your Internet Service Providers (ISPs) site. You may read it there or download it to your computer for reading "off line." The advantages of this type of E-mail is you can access it from any computer that has a connection to the World Wide Web (WWW) and it is usually set up automatically on your computer by the ISP when you install the software. It is "easy to use." The only disadvantage is some ISP's, such as AOL, PeoplePC and Juno, require you to use their E-mail tools. If you prefer to use Eudora (free at www.eudora.com/) or Outlook Express, they will not work. Some of the lower cost ISP providers include advertisements that you must look at before you get to read your mail or surf the web. POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the original form of E-mail. Most large companies that operate their own E-mail systems use POP3. Comcast that supplies Cable Modem service to Tucson Estates uses POP3. Netzero is also POP3 E-mail. It is not that important which type of E-mail you have unless you want to use an E-mail tool such as Outlook Express. In addition your ISP provider, there are a number of other E-mail providers that do not supply a connection to the Internet. Google, Yahoo and Hotmail (MSN) are probably the most commonly know E-mail suppliers. If you are an alumnus of a university, you can often get a free E-mail account from them. (They like to be able to keep track of you and keep asking for donations.)It is often useful to have several different E-mail accounts. One that you use with people you really want to get E-mail from (your good account) and one to use when you have to provide an E-mail address to access a web site or download some data (your SPAM account). It is especially useful to have a SPAM account if you like to use chat rooms. Then the SPAM and other garbage E-mail will go to the SPAM account and not be mixed in with your good E-mail. |
